How Taekwon-Do Can Protect Against Childhood Obesity

It has been reported that childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions here in Irelan. There are now over 300,000 Irish Children considered to be obese. Ten per cent of children aged five to 12 in Ireland are obese. Obese children generally go on to become obese adults, causing huge health implications for their futures.

One of the main contributary factors in this problem is that of inactivity and lack of exercise. Increasing amounts of time spent in front of  screens (T.V, computers, video games) and not enough time engaged in activities that will develop and strengthen young bodies for the challenges of later life.

At North County Dublin’s Elite Taekwon-Do Academy in Balbriggan and Loughshinny our students develop flexibilty, balance, co-ordination, strength and stamina. Students are challenged to reach their fullest potential whatever that may be. Unlike a lot of sports, Taekwon-Do does not focus on scores or results but rather on an individual’s development. This supportive environment helps children to actually enjoy being active and learning how to look after their health and fitness.

Taekwon-Do students are expected to commit to a minimum of 10 minutes training each day that they are not in class. This way physical conditioning becomes part of their daily routine and ultimately a habit that will last a lifetime.
