Master Terry Donnelly, 7th Dan, is the senior instructor at Loughshinny/Balrothery/Lusk/Skerries Elite Tae Kwon Do Acadamy. Master Donnelly began his Taekwon-Do training in 1981 under Misters Aidan Walsh 4th Dan and Brendan O Toole 3rd Dan. 34 years later Master Donnelly still trains regularly with both gentlemen although these days Mr Walsh is a 6th Dan and Master O Toole is an 8th Dan.
As a competitor Master Donnelly enjoyed a sterling career winning 3 titles as Overall National Black Belt Champion and proudly representing Ireland from 1984 to 1996.
As an instructor Master Donnelly first opened a school in Finglas in 1987 and after many successful years there eventually relocated to the Skerries area where he opened the towns first Taekwon-Do school in 1999. He has been training and developing Black Belt students consistently to this day.
As a coach Master Donnelly has the distinction of being the first national coach to guide an Irish man to a World title in Sparring, when Ciaran Ryan took gold in Germany at the ITF world championships in 2005. Many of Master Donnellys students have competed successfully at National and International level. In 2012 Daniel Donnelly won Gold at the ITF World Cup in Brighton while most recently in 2014 Samy Lamari took an individual Bronze medal at the ITF European Cup in Hungary and a Gold Medal for Team Sparring in the ITF European Championships in Italy. Samy also holds the distinction of being selected for the Irish Kickboxing team for the WAKO European Championships. In May of 2015 another ETA student Carl McGrath will represent Ireland yet again at the ITF World Championships and we are confident Carl can add to our medals.
In 1995 Master Donnelly was promoted to 4th Dan Black belt, and this, along with successfully completing the ITF International Instructors Course under TaeKwon-Do’s founder General Choi Hong Hi qualified Terry to examine students for rank. He has been active in this role at Regional and National level for the past 20 years. It is a role he takes very seriously and only awards rank to those who have reached the required standard of the International Taekwon-Do Federation.
In April of 2014 Terry reached a personal milestone when he successfully tested for 7th degree under the ITF Technical Commitee of Grandmasters Willem Bos 9th Dan (Italy), Hector Marano 9th Dan (Argentina, and Kim Lan Ung 9th Dan (Germany). After 33 years in Taekwon-Do, he had achieved the coveted “Master” rank.
